Spray-on bedliner coatings are used extensively in both the automobile industry and in defense to offer protection from physical impact, chipping, abrasion and corrosion because of exposure, in addition to allowing for better slip resistance. These coatings generally consist of 100 percent polyurethane and 100 percent polyurea or a hybrid consisting of polyurethane and polyurea layers. They are applied to bed frames for trucks constructed of aluminum or steel. Several spray-on bedliner coating companies, including ArmorThane, Bullet Liner(TM), and ArmorThane, are available on the marketplace.

How Bedliners are used

Before beginning the spray-on procedure, the entire truck bed area is cleaned and sanded to ensure a solid bond is formed. Other steps include removing the tailgate and other components and covering the outside to protect from overspray. Using a nozzle in an area with good ventilation allows this protective coating to be applied with long, sweeping movements and left for drying between coatings.

An end-to-end texture coating can be applied to rough or smooth areas. To meet coating requirements for thickness, several layers of bedliner are applied to the entire surface of the bed. This provides a consistent texture and adequate slip resistance, even in damp conditions, after a short time of curing. This protective bedliner is now ready to be used in transportation.

The importance of measuring Bedliner Thickness

Bedliner coatings are usually between 3-6 millimeters (125-250 millimeters) thick. Sufficient coating layers must be applied to ensure that the overall layer thickness falls within the limits the coating manufacturer specifies. Insufficient liner thickness could result in the coating failing early and expose the truck’s bed to corrosion. Applying more than the recommended thickness is just an inefficient time and cost. Thus, a device capable of precisely measuring the thickness of the cured bedliner is essential for optimal efficiency and cost savings.
